08/01/2013 | Winter 2013

2012 has been a busy year at Glancey Medical hence why we haven’t had a newsletter for a while. We have been busy playing with our new equipment to ensure you get the best results. So our first newsletter of 2013 is packed with exciting stuff so without further ado let’s tell you what’s new.

Viva Las VASER

Back in summer 2012 we started trialling our new VASER liposuction system.

We had great feedback from colleagues that had been using the system but as with all new technologies claims can be made about effectiveness but we wanted to be sure.

Well the good news is ‘it’s great’! Over the summer last year we treated a range of body areas and the results along with patient feedback is remarkable.

VASER (Vibration Amplification of Sound Energy at Resonance) uses the most advanced ultrasound technology to breakdown fat cells. This ultrasound energy only targets fat cells, leaving all surrounding tissues undamaged.

The ‘liquified’ fat is then removed using low level suction which reduces trauma to the area compared with conventional liposuction.

VASER Lipo really is the most effective minimally invasive method of removing unwanted fat creating definition and curves you’ve always wanted.

And it just gets better….many of our original patients tell us that the results just get better, and that 6 months on they are still seeing an improvement in the treated areas.

Grace, a beauty therapist from Kent says:

I’m over the moon with the results. I hated my thighs and no matter what I wore I couldn’t disguise them. I had tried all the usual things to try and improve my shape like dieting and exercise but my thighs were stubborn and nothing seemed to work. The procedure was relatively easy with very little discomfort afterwards, in fact I flew out to Las Vegas 5 days after having the procedure! I love my new shape, Viva Las Vaser.

Accent The Positives

Many of us desire a tighter jaw line, smoother neck and sharper more defined facial features and this is now possible using our Radio Frequency skin tightening procedure.

The Accent skin tightening system is a revolutionary skin tightening regime using advanced radio frequency (RF) technology to treat wrinkles non-invasively. It is highly effective in tightening loose skin, promoting healthy collagen production and improving body contours.

Skin tightening is brought about by using radio waves to vibrate water molecules within the tissues. This causes friction which creates heat. Heat causes shrinking of collagen fibres which in turn leads to skin tightening. A course of treatments is usually recommended and don’t worry the procedure isn’t at all painful, not a needle in sight! See Our ‘New Year Offers' for a real treat.

'Out With The Old in With The New' - Laser Skin Resurfacing

We have for a long time understood the benefits that botox and filler have in maintaining a youthful appearance but we also understand their limitations. Many women decide to start aesthetic treatments when they approach 40 and have already begun to show the ageing effects of a hectic and stressful lifestyle and also from the harmful effects of years in the sun.

Unfortunately some of this damage is difficult to treat with fillers and botox alone and we need to go back to basics starting with the skin. We often say to our patients that Medical Aesthetics is a bit like decorating a house and there is no point just papering over the cracks!! We want to give our patients a great base on which to work and our Laser resurfacing procedures are producing excellent results and our before and after pictures speak for themselves.

Unlike ablative laser resurfacing which removes the whole of the top layer of skin, we use a fractional method which partially ablates the skin leaving some skin perfectly intact which allows it to heal much faster. This process causes collagen remodeling, skin tightening and an improvement in skin texture.  Healing times are remarkably quick and can be easily concealed with makeup.

There are lots of other ways to improve your skin and here are just some of our top tips;

  • Skin care. Good skin care is so important to ensure you maintain good skin health. We prescribe a range of topical skin creams that will physically change the structure of the skin increasing collagen and promoting cellular renewal which becomes sluggish with age. All our patients can benefit from complimentary skin advice and receive a treatment programme specifically designed to personally suit their needs.

  • Glo SPF 40 MoisturiserSun protection. Ok so we constantly nag our patients to wear sun protection even in the winter. Many patients have moisturisers that have an SPF 15 included but this is not high enough and would require applying an additional sun block over the top. We’ve found a great new product by Glo Therapeutics that is a moisturiser with an SPF of 40. We think this is perfect for those that have limited time to apply product and also great for men that just want one product. It is reasonably priced at £40.00 so there really is no excuse anymore not to wear a block!!

  • Smoking. Simple message STOP! We always encourage our patients to keep their skin protected from the sun and to stop smoking as these two factors have a huge impact on the ageing of the skin. Smoking affects the entire body and when it is put under stress - in this case with a toxic concoction of carbon monoxide, cyanide, tar, formaldehyde and other chemicals  -  the brain diverts vitamins away from your skin to be used elsewhere.

Nicotine also reduces blood flow to the lower living layer of skin, or dermis, which results in less oxygen being delivered. Skin becomes sallow and the regularity and quality of cell production deteriorate, leading to dry, flaky skin that is less resilient to external stresses.

Over time the skin sags and wrinkles because the body cannot produce collagen effectively. Smoke saps the body of Vitamin C - a key component in the manufacturing of collagen - and disturbs the production of an enzyme called matrix metalloproteinase.
This enzyme should regulate collagen production but in smokers destroys more tissue than it produces, leading to skin that is lined and less plump.

The good news is that if you stop some of the damage is reversable. Topical serums containing Vitamin A will speed up skin-cell turnover, Vitamin C to stimulate collagen production and Vitamin E to encourage healing. Peptides will signal to your brain that more collagen needs to be produced.

While clinical tests for lycopene supplements  -  an antioxidant found in red fruit, especially tomatoes  -  have focused on preventing and reversing skin damage caused by the sun, the destructive processes that smoking and sunbathing initiate are remarkably similar.

Lycopene supplement, a fish-oil supplement, with a high concentration of omega-3 will dampen inflammation, promote healing and aid moisture-retention in the dermis.

Lecture over!! But make sure that giving up is one New Year’s resolution that you should keep.

Rotten Rosacea

We recently upgraded our Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) system and have been amazed with the outstanding results. IPL is a system used to target both colour and collagen in the skin in order to remove pigmentation, red thread veins and boost collagen regeneration in the skin. We have always been really happy with the results that can be achieved using this technology but realised that massive improvements have been made in the delivery systems giving better results and increasing the skin conditions that we can treat.

The Harmony system from the award winning ABC Laser range offers endless possibilities to treat the skin as a whole. From active acne to pigmentation to thread veins we can achieve younger, clearer skin that is actively producing collagen so the results get better and better.

One area of work that we are particularly excited about is treating telangiactasia (or matted thread veins) on the neck and décolleté. This redness on the neck is known as Poiklioderma and can be caused by several factors but typically it is due to sun damage and also sensitising the area to UV with perfumes.  With this condition the sides of the neck are considerably redder than the surrounding skin and the ‘V’ under the chin is clear as this area will have been ‘shaded’ from the sun. The décolleté can also be affected and may also be accompanied with fine lines which are extremely difficult to treat with dermal fillers.

This area has always been problematic to treat with both IPL and Lasers due to the increased risk of damage to the skin which meant that the energies delivered had to be comparatively lower compared to those given for facial treatments. However the new Dye PL treatment head delivers the energy in a precise way similar to a Laser and the results are fantastic.

Our patients that we have treated so far are delighted with the results and can really see the long term benefits that IPL has on their skin.

Susan on her wedding dayWedding Bells

Back in September we had a good excuse to get all dressed up and celebrate when Susan our clinic receptionist tied the knot.

She looked amazing (all thanks to Glancey Medical of course!!) and wore a beautiful oyster gown. The stunning backdrop for the occasion was Down Hall nestled in the picturesque Hertfordshire countryside, the weather was glorious and the champagne flowed.

We would all like to thank Mr and Mrs Simper for a wonderful day and wish them both a very happy and healthy life together.

And now to look forward...

2013 looks to be a busy year and very exciting now that we can offer our patients more treatment options to compliment our existing portfolio. We have some really interesting medical conferences booked in for the year and we will feedback any new developments and interesting news so stay in touch with us on Twitter, Facebook and our blogs.

Wishing you all prosperous New Year and look forward to seeing you very soon.
