What is Botox®

There are many different forms of what we commonly call Botox®. These include Vistabel®, Dysport®, Xeomin® and Azzalure® with more coming onto the market! The common link is that they are all derived from the toxin Botulinium Toxin Type A.

What areas can be treated with Botox®?

Botox® is used to treat a variety of indications. Cosmetically it can be used to prevent lines and wrinkles around the eyes known as crow's feet and also in between the eyes on the frown lines and on the forehead.

Botox® can also be used along the top lip in combination with fillers to eliminate 'smokers lines' and in the corners of the mouth to prevent the 'Mouth Frown'. The neck area can be treated to eliminate nasty neck bands or 'rings'.

The jawline can be softened with Botox® and the lower face lifted in a procedure known as the 'nefertiti lift'. This procedure addresses the lower face, chin, neck and jawline areas creating a non surgical lifting effect.

Botox® has been successfully used for many years to treat hiperhidrosis (excessive sweating). This can be an extremely debilitating condition and can affect many areas of the body including the hands, feet and groin, but most commonly the under arms.

How does Botox work?

We create fine lines and wrinkles during movement of the facial muscles. These lines are seen when we move and are known as 'dynamic lines'. Over time these lines will become permanent or 'static lines' and can be seen even when the facial mucsles are not moving. By injecting small amounts of botox® into the facial muscles we can temporarily stop the muscles from moving. This will prevent the lines from forming and soften deeper lines.

Is it going to get rid of my lines completely?

Botox® is used on what we call dynamic lines, that is to say lines that form during facial movement and is used as a preventative measure to stop these movement lines from becoming permanent. Those lines that are static i.e. visible even when the face is at rest, are going to be softened with Botox® but may need to be treated in combination with a dermal filler to achieve full correction.

How long will it last?

When the upper part of the face is treated with Botox® it is expected to last between 3-4 months but in some cases can last up to 6 months. If patients are encouraged to break the habit of certain facial movements for example frowning, this will help the effect of Botox® to last longer.

If we are using Botox® to treat Hiperhidrosis or excessive sweating this can last between 6-12 months.

Will I see instant results once I've had the treatments?

It can take up to 10-14 days for the effects of Botox® to take full effect. When having the procedure for the first time we like you to come back 2 to 3 weeks later so that we can check the results and if necessary 'touch up' to make sure you have the very best results.
Please note we cannot 'top up' treatments after 4 weeks following the initial procedure.

Will the procedure hurt?

The majority of clients report a minimal discomfort and in most cases there is no need for any topical anesthetic. The procedure is completed very quickly (10-15 minutes).

I have heard that Botox® can give me an eyebrow lift ?

By placing the Botox® in the frown area we can release the muscles that cause the eyebrows to 'pull down'. This creates a lovely lift which opens the eyes and gives a youthful appearance. However if an eyebrow lift is not required the Botox® is placed slightly differenetly and the eyebrows will remain in the same position and this is usually the case when treating men. Your practitioner will discuss what effect you want to achieve and adjust the treatment accordingly.

If I don't like the effect what can I do?

It is very rare that clients do not like the effect that Botox® gives them. However if this were to occur we would encourage the patient to actively move the treated area and this will help the movement to be restored quickly with no long lasting effects.

Can I return to my normal activities after the treatment?

Botox® is classed as a lunch time procedure, that is to say that you can return to work immediately and nobody would know that you have had anything done!

Are there any side effects?

With any injectable there is always the risk of bruising and at worst a haematoma (severe bruising). This is extremely rare and most clients just have a slight reddening which can be covered with medicated make up. Clients leave the clinic with little or no sign of having had the treatment.

If the aftercare instructions are followed there are very few problems but in a small number of cases an eyebrow or eyelid drop can occur but this is very rare.

Is it a safe procedure?

Botox® in its various forms has been used medically for over 20 years for the treatment of many medical conditions including palsy and facial spasms. It has extensive safety data and research to suggest its safety and efficacy. For cosmetic purposes we use minute quantities compared to medical indications and research has shown that after just 48 hours the Botulinium Toxin has completely gone from the body leaving only the side effects i.e. no movement and smooth wrinkle free skin.

Is there any aftercare advice that I should follow?

There is very little that you need to do after the treatment but we do advise you to stay upright for 3-4 hours after the procedure. This will prevent the Botox® from migrating down, so no shoe shopping immediately afterwards! Also we suggest that you move the treated area for 2-3 hours after the procedure to encourage the Botox® into the muscles. The practitioner will give you a full list of aftercare advice following your treatment.

We also advise clients not to fly for up to two days after the treatment.

Jean 39 years, from London, says:

Treated with Botox® for the eyes and frown area.

I was always being told that I looked cross and tired because I had a deep line in between my eyes (probably from constant frowning at my three boys and husband!). I work on a busy reception desk and was in constant contact with the general public and I started to feel my confidence slipping. I was also rapidly approaching 40 I felt that I should do something quick and get some confidence back. I visited the Glancey Medical Clinic and felt instantly at ease. The staff were so friendly and made me feel very reassured. I can't tell you the effect having Botox has made. I looked fresh, brighter and younger! I have had many comments from friends, family and work colleagues all commenting on how good I look and I love it. It was the best thing I ever did!

Emma 32 years, Patient Co-ordinator, from London, says:

Treated for Hyperhidrosis under arms.

I used to get up in the morning and within the hour I would have to change my top as I had rings of sweat visibly showing. The more I worried about it the worse it got. It affected everything I did and I gave up my job for a while because I was so embraced and ashamed. After having the Botox® the difference was amazing the sweating completely stopped and I got my life back. I would sell my car if I had to pay for this treatment and I love my car!
